Featured Employee | Meet Jenn

TGIF! This week’s Featured Employee is a Professional Services Consultant based out of our Beltsville office. Jenn is originally from Sparta, New Jersey and graduated from Clemson University.

Jenn joined Vocus in April 2014. When asked what her greatest accomplishment has been at Vocus, Jenn says, “I don’t think I’ve been at Vocus long enough to truly have a benchmark career accomplishment, but I like to think I have proven myself as a team player amongst the other PSCs, and someone they all can rely on…or at least have a good laugh with :) ”.

If you would like to know more, connect with Jenn on LinkedIn.

Jenn_headshotQ: If you aren’t at your desk, where are you most likely?
A: Sundogs during lunch reading a book, or checking out Lou’s Candy Shop to see if Butterfingers were added to one of the jars.

Q: What are some of your favorite hobbies outside of work?
A: I consider myself somewhat of a Renaissance Lady, so this list is ever-growing. When I’m not at Vocus creating Boolean strings and refining media monitor terms, I am working out … a lot. Keeping physically fit is a huge part of my life: I do crossfit, run marathons, and ref women’s lacrosse. As a result, I have about fifteen pairs of mis-matched athletic socks – I swear the more I buy the less chance they come out of the laundry as a pair. I also really enjoy art – I wanted to be an artist when I was younger, but that doesn’t really pay the bills in modern society. I paint, sketch, and do some freelance graphic design. My Mom is a super talented water-color painter and my Brother is a solo musician, so I think the creative gene runs in our family. I also really enjoy reading – anything from a suspenseful fiction novel, to a “how to” on stock investing. It is the best way to gain knowledge and perspective. Finally, I’m not sure if you would consider this a hobby, but I am really good at remembering movie quotes, which positions me to be an asset in a game of trivia or Catch Phrase.

Q: If you could pick anyone in the world to have lunch with, who would it be and why?Jenn Halloween wine
A: Assuming anyone ever in the world, Leonardo DaVinci, the Renaissance Man himself. I find it fascinating that his ideas and inventions are still relevant today, hundreds of years later. And of course, I could ask him why Mona Lisa has that smirk on her face…

Q: What’s your favorite food?
A: Does Chik Fil A Sauce count as a food?

Q: If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be and why?
A: Charleston, SC. My parents retired there last year and the diversity of the city is amazing. Great food, great weather, great culture.CCT

Q: What is your most treasured possession?
A: My lacrosse stick. I have had it since high school and played with it during college. Unfortunately I do not currently play, so my stick now serves a new purposes as a potential weapon against burglars and conveniently rests near my front door. I live in Baltimore … you’ve seen the show “The Wire”, right?

Jenn_ArtQ: What’s the one word you would choose to describe yourself?
A: Supercalafragalisticexpealadocious

Q: What’s some advice you would give a new employee for being successful at Vocus?
A: Two things – this can apply to any new employee at any company. 1. Be a sponge. Soak up all and any information you can about the company and its operations – even if it may not relate directly to your role or department. Seeing the bigger picture is always better than the little picture. 2. “Drink the kool-aid, but don’t get caught at the cooler.” This is one of my favorite quotes – it means be open to all opinions, but don’t be a victim of groupthink. If you hear a co-worker say something negative, understand why they may think that way, but don’t automatically think it is true and say the same thing. Make judgments on your own accord. I have found this extremely helpful in and outside of the office.

A: I enjoy attending concerts, sporting events, traveling (I always have a top three travel destinations) and being a Chicago Tourist. I am currently a board member with the James Madison University Alumni Chapter of Chicago where I coordinate social and charity events. I am also an avid sports fan and love following the Boston Red Sox, New England Patriots, Boston Celtics, and University of Virginia basketball.

Q: If you could pick anyone in the world to have lunch with, who would it be and why?Reid21
A: A ninja, duh… but then I wouldn’t be able to see them…

Q: What is your favorite food?
A: Lobster, I am from Maine after all. And if we can make it surf and turf by throwing in some steak I wouldn’t be upset about it at all. However, if you ask anyone around the office they will tell you I am obsessed with Chipotle… which I am.

Q: If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be and why?
A: Chicago. Honestly. I have lived all over (Maine, Virginia, Texas) and am completely in love with this City. It is PERFECT. If I had to pick anywhere outside of Chicago it would probably be Boston so I could be closer to my family. I have two nieces and a nephew who are just the cutest.

Q: What is your most treasured possession?Reid22
A: I am not sure I have a tangible possession that comes to mind. Sadly. My desk always lacks any sort of decorations as well.

Q: What’s the one word you would choose to describe yourself?
A: Strengthsquest and DiSC tell me it would be: Relator. “I enjoy turning strangers into friends and building a relationship with them.” There is a lot of truth to this.

Q: What’s some advice you would give a new employee for being successful at Cision?
A: Since I am responsible for onboarding and training our new sales reps I get the distinct pleasure of doing this for my job! I always tell them to take responsibility for their “brand” here at Cision. They should remain positive at all times and in the following order:

  1. Master your job
  2. Get involved
  3. Become a thought leader/innovator in their position and department

Featured Employee | Meet Laura

This week’s Featured Employee, Laura, joined Vocus in 2011. She is an Account Executive on our Mid Market team, based out of our Beltsville office. When asked what her greatest accomplishment at Vocus is, Laura responds, “Last year I hit president’s club as my first year as an AE. It was definitely a challenge and a lot of hard work, but going on the amazing trip to Puerto Rico this year made it all worth it!”

Laura is originally from Pittsburgh, PA and graduated from Penn State University. Outside of work, Laura enjoys cooking and trying new restaurants in the DC area. She loves spending time outdoors and traveling when she can. She will be backpacking through Southeast Asia soon!

If you want to learn more, connect with Laura on LinkedIn.

laura m2Q: If you aren’t at your desk, where are you most likely?
A: I’d like to say I would be in the gym, but I definitely spend most of my time refueling in the various coffee shops of Vocus town. I drink at least three cups each day.

Q: If you could pick anyone in the world to have lunch with, who would it be and why?Demand Success
A: My grandparents. They both passed away when I was very young and there is still so much I’d like to know about their lives.

Q: What’s your favorite food?
A: I try to eat healthy most of the time, but my guilty pleasure is macaroni and cheese. It sounds simple, but I will never get sick of it!

Q: If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be and why?
A: Southern California. Or, really anywhere that is warm year-round and is near the beach. I would be totally fine with never seeing snow again : )Laura wedding

Q: What is your most treasured possession?
A: My family. I know they aren’t technically a possession but we talk almost every day and I would honestly be lost without them!

Q: What’s some advice you would give a new employee for being successful at Vocus?
A: Come in every day with a really good attitude. Positivity is so important in any environment and truly makes a difference in everything you do in your job. In the tech industry, things are constantly changing, so you’ve got to adapt often and not get discouraged going out of your comfort zone.

Featured Employee | Meet Ian

Happy Halloween! This week’s Featured Employee joined Cision in June 2014. Ian is a Media Researcher based out of our headquarters in Chicago. He is originally from Springfield, Virginia. Outside of work, Ian loves to be outdoors as much as he can! He enjoys hiking, camping, and traveling. He has lived in four states and three time zones since graduating from Principia College in 2008!

If you want to learn more about Cision, connect with Ian on LinkedIn and Twitter.1150980_10201930976024157_568353056_n

Q: If you aren’t at your desk, where are you most likely?
A: Grabbing fruit candy from reception.

Q: What are some of your favorite hobbies outside of work?
A: I am an actor, so I love working with scripts and other creatives putting together a show or shooting something. A group of friends and I get together regularly(ish) to read scripts and look for something to produce.

1011141020Q: If you could pick anyone in the world to have lunch with, who would it be and why?
A: I actually had lunch with Robert Duvall once (we have the same Alma Mater), so I’ll pick someone from the outdoor world. Tenzig Norgay was the Sherpa who helped Sir Edmund Hillary climb Everest for the first time. Can I have a translator?

60980_512819040502_950132_nQ: What’s your favorite food?
A: The interesting answer is Vietnamese food. My mother is Vietnamese and grew up in Vietnam. My sister & I rate Vietnamese restaurants based on whether we would take our mom there. But the truth is there is no more perfect food than pizza.

Q: If you could live anywhere in the world, where would it be and why?
A: Does anyone have just one answer to this question? I love the UK, I want to see the Himalayas and New Zealand. My parents are going to Ecuador for at least a year when they retire so I have to go there. I think I need to see a few more places before I can settle on one as perfect for me.

Q: What is your most treasured possession?
A: She’s not a “possession,” per se, but my dog. We didn’t have a dog growing up, so she is my first and I’ve had her almost 5 years now. She brings me outside of myself and loves the outdoors even more than me.

Q: What’s the one word you would choose to describe yourself?10669274_10152342273676883_5264165104553007445_o
A: Something like “divided,” but without the negative connotation. I tend to have a foot on either side of things. I love the country and the backcountry, but I want easy access to the culture, food, and friends that the city provides. The acting thing keeps me tied to the city too, but I also would love to do something that keeps me outdoors more of the time (before moving to Chicago, I lived in a cabin and was Assistant Director at an outdoor center & summer camp). It keeps things interesting, I guess?
